Small Films Lost

Posted in actors, Eric Stoltz, film, hairspray, indie, Sundance on January 21, 2008 by kilroyrogers

Sundance is in full swing, genre labels will pick up dozens of smaller releases that they will pay perhaps millions to acquire, and yet one in ten will make a multiplex near you for a week. Indie film has become the filmic equivalent to mounting a Broadway show, with all the attendant losses and spectacularly risky odds of success. Even attaching a star name to a low budge vehicle is no guarantee of success. Indie cred is no longer a valid calling card, and Eric Stoltzian indie heroes are in short supply, and perhaps mercifully so, to the benefit of our greater cultural good. Sure, we love our indie gods and godesses, but even they grow…tiresome now. It’s time to wipe the slate clean and bring on a new round of eccentrics. It’s time to live up to the Kenneth Anger promise. You know that pledge, don’t you, reader? Shock and awe, with a piss elegant edge. Where’d the fun stuff go? Oh, yeah right, Cry Baby; Hairspray; The Producers…it went to Broadway!!!!!
